Black Bears stomp Sacred Heart in both double-header games Sunday.

The University of Maine baseball team swept Sacred Heart Sunday in a double-header. The Black Bears won 11-2 and 5-3 with help from freshman Taylor Lewis who had two triples in the first game. The Black Bears improve to 12-9 this season. The games were played in the cold 30 degree weather on Sunday but the Bears were excited to be out. These were the first games of the season that were played on their new artificial grass which was installed in the late fall. The bears are really excited to be able to play on a better surface than the normal grass field they played on in the past. I spoke with senior Kevin McAvoy and he really likes playing on the new turf. He explained how the balls take less random hops like they did when balls were hit on the grass. The newly renovated baseball field was just finished and ready to play on by Saturday. University of Maine grounds crew spent the bulk of last week clearing the field of snow. Industrial size snow blowers and heaters were used to clear show and melt ice on the field and in the dugouts. The weekend games against sacred Heart sparked two good wins for the Bears as they continue on in hopefully warmer weather. The Bears continue next Friday when they take on Wagner on a four game away stand.
