Male Athletes Against Violence

The athletic department at the University of Maine has a group of varsity male athletes which make up the group MAAV or Male Athletes Against Violence. The groups coordinator Sandy Caron oversees the events the group hosts. For the most part the point of the group is to break the stigma about male athletes and violence. Many individuals associate violence with male athletes; this is a stigma that has grown over many years. We always see stories on the news about male athletes committing violent acts toward women although, the group MAAV was started to educate the community about violence and ways we can stop it.

The MAAV group speaks at many community events spreading knowledge of a violence free world. Also they host bake sales in the union to gain awareness of their group. Also the group reads the book, "Hands Are Not For Hitting," to children at local elementary schools. The group will go to any length to stop violence in the community and break the common stigma that so many individuals believe are true with athletes.

Here is a link to the groups website, as well as an article and news story of the groups involvment in the community.
